Monica B’s story

How were you diagnosed?

Via 3D mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy-- DCIS stage 0

How did you choose a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or other option? If mastectomy, what reconstruction did you choose, if any?

Going for a bilateral mastectomy this month-- I don't want to kick this cancer can down the road, and I don't want to deal with the effects of pills and radiation. Not looking for reconstruction at this time.

What other treatment did you choose?

Hopefully, I won't need any radiation with a full mastectomy.

What key milestones or memories hold the most significance?

Ugh, the day I was diagnosed, but also the day we spoke with our adult kids and realized yet again how sage and caring they are. Their perspective really gave me clarity as to my next steps.

What advice do you have for other women?

Consider that full mastectomy is an option to avoid the stress of a possible relapse in the future, that you are more than your breasts, that your overall physical and mental health is tantamount.

What is the silver lining in your journey, if any?

Showing others the importance of regular screening and early action.

Summarize your journey in three words!

Serenity now ommmmmmmm

What else do you want to add?

Thanks for the tips and story of your journey in your book-- it's become a primer for me and my husband as we take this journey together.
